About the
artist
BILL BLAST (William Cordero),
1964 Manhattan New
York
"I love to make things
containing a message. In the past, we did the
same on the trains. When the trains passed, the
people could see our messages. It was
fantastic.Graffiti completely swallowed me. I
was fascinated to see the huge paintings
entering the subway stations. In the beginning
some paintings stayed on the trains for 3
years.
I started in the 70's when there
was an unwritten law not to go over anyone
elses piece. You could only challenge it by
doing another piece. That manner of respecting
each other has gone
now.
I go to the gettho's and talk to
the young kids about respect and good quality
graffiti and how to stay away from
vandalism.
The problem is that graffiti is
still a big taboo. People see you as a graffiti
vandal. I have a serious art education and I
think the graffiti way gives ultimate freedom
to you as an artist. The spray can is a new and
fascinating technique for painting, but also I
draw a lot. Drawings improve my
paintings.
A lot of the younger graffiti
kids are pre-occupated with speed. I don't care
about that anymore. It was a necessity doing
the trains in the early days, but now it's not
that important
anymore.
I felt that graffiti was very
similar to the Hieroglyphs. Most people
couldn't read Wild Style. I went on a
Hieroglyph course and was intrigued. Then I did
a series of paintings using elements of
Egyptian art. I used the Egyptian elements as
symbols. One of those works shows Osiris and
crack. The message: using Crack means
death!
I'm having difficulties with the
art establishment. People don't understand the
meaning of gaffiti.
Probably because it comes from
the gettho. Much of graffiti art expresses an
anger that comes from deep within. But still
this anger is expressed in a friendly,
esthetical and non-threatening way.It is time
that americans start to think positively about
this art form."
